Pallet size explainer · Updated

What Is the Standard Pallet Dimensions?

Two specifications dominate global trade. The North American standard is 48×40 in, while Europe follows 1200×800×144 mm. Understanding both keeps supply chains compatible across warehouses, racking, and trailers.

Standard footprints

When vendors mention standard pallets, they reference these profiles:

  • 48×40 GMA: 1219×1016 mm, widely available in stringer or block builds, often Grade A/B recycled.
  • 1200×800 EPAL 1: 1200×800×144 mm, 25 kg tare, 1,500 kg safe working load.

Other “standard” sizes such as 42×42 in or 1067×1067 mm are sector-specific but less universal.

Conversion cheatsheet

Spec Metric Imperial
GMA footprint 1219 × 1016 mm 48 × 40 in
GMA height 140–165 mm 5.5–6.5 in
EPAL footprint 1200 × 800 mm 47.2 × 31.5 in
EPAL height 144 mm 5.7 in

How to choose the right standard

Check route requirements

Use EPAL pallets for EU lanes and exchange pools; opt for 48×40 in lanes in North America unless customers request alternatives.

Map racking and automation

Ensure racks or conveyors accept your chosen footprint. The wooden pallet dimensions guide covers common beam gaps.

Verify compliance

Exports? Specify ISPM 15 heat-treated pallets or consider plastic pallets for HT-free shipping.

FAQ

Is 48×40 the same as a standard pallet?

Yes for US/Canada operations. In Europe, 48×40 is a non-standard size—request 1200×800 mm instead.

Does standard include half pallets?

Half pallets (800×600 mm) exist in EPAL but are not called the standard size. They serve retail displays.
