Cubic Meter to Square Meter Calculator
Divide volume by height to recover floor area. Enter cubic meters and height in meters to calculate area in m² and ft².
Volume to area calculator
Formula: area m² = volume m³ ÷ height (m). Multiply by 10.7639 for square feet.
Quick table
| Volume (m³) | Height (m) | Area (m²) | Area (ft²) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 | 2.4 | 7.500 | 80.73 |
| 9.6 | 1.6 | 6.000 | 64.58 |
| 28 | 3.0 | 9.333 | 100.46 |

When to use it
Warehouse layout
Start from volume allowances to see how much floor space is left under a given height restriction.
Container planning
Check the m³ to ft² calculator if you need imperial floor area for trailers or containers.
Stack height checks
Use the TI-HI calculator with case dimensions, pallet base height, and confirmed constraints to calculate whole layers; this area result does not establish a stack count.
FAQ
Can I enter height in feet?
Convert feet to metres by multiplying by the exact international-foot factor 0.3048 before entering height.
What if the height varies across the space?
Split the volume into sections with consistent heights, convert each, then add the areas together.
Recover area only with a stated height
For 24 m³ at a uniform 2 m height, area = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 m². At 1.5 m, the same volume needs 16 m². A lower occupied height increases the equivalent area; neither assumed height is a recommended stack limit. Convert a 200 cm height to 2 m before entering it.
Split stepped regions before adding their areas
A region containing 12 m³ at 1 m has area 12 m²; another containing 16 m³ at 2 m has area 8 m². Their combined area is 20 m². Dividing the combined 28 m³ by an unweighted 1.5 m average gives 18.667 m² and is unsuitable for those unequal regions. If only total volume and several heights are known, the split is still missing.
Distinguish an area quantity from a pallet layout
A 6 × 2 m rectangle and a 4 × 3 m rectangle each have 12 m², but can admit different pallet arrangements. Aisles, columns, doors and spacing are not represented by volume ÷ height. A sum of carton volumes also need not equal the full pallet envelope. Use actual length and width in a layout, and the finished pallet dimensions for an outside volume.
The interface displays square metres to three decimals and square feet to two. Its square-foot multiplier is the approximate 10.7639; the exact length definition 1 ft = 0.3048 m gives 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m². Both give 129.17 ft² for the 12 m² example at the displayed precision. Do not reconstruct measurements from rounded results or mistake extra decimals for physical accuracy.
Both inputs must be positive. A missing, zero or negative height resets the display; dividing a positive volume by zero is undefined, not a zero-area result. Save the original volume, height assumption, unit conversion and unrounded area. Copy link shares the page URL without restoring the fields. Reverse the 12 m² example in the area-to-volume calculator: 12 × 2 = 24 m³. NIST's exact international-foot definition supports the squared conversion.
