Square Meter to Cubic Meter Calculator

Square meters measure area. To convert to cubic meters you must multiply by height or depth in meters. Use the calculator below to get CBM for storage bins, rooms, or pallet stacks.

Area to volume calculator

Cubic metres (CBM) 0

Formula: CBM = area (m²) × height (m). Keep units in metres for correct results.

Planning tips

Measure usable height

Use a confirmed geometric height for the region being measured. The responsible site operation must supply any required clearances; this calculator does not determine them.

Check pallet stack heights

Use the TI-HI calculator with pallet base height, case dimensions, and the correctly defined total loaded-height limit to compare whole layers against entered constraints.

FAQ

What if my height is in centimetres?

Convert centimetres to metres by dividing by 100, then enter the value above. The calculator expects metres.

Can I use different heights across the area?

Break the space into sections with consistent heights, calculate each volume, then sum the CBM totals.

Convert the depth before multiplying

For a 10 m² footprint at 250 mm depth, first convert 250 mm to 0.25 m. Volume = 10 × 0.25 = 2.5 m³. Entering 250 in the metre-labelled height field would instead give 2500 m³, a thousandfold input error. The same 10 m² area at 0.5 m gives 5 m³: area alone never defines volume.

Add regions with different heights

A stepped shape with 12 m² at 1 m and 8 m² at 2 m has volume 12 × 1 + 8 × 2 = 28 m³. Multiplying its total 20 m² by the unweighted average height of 1.5 m would wrongly give 30 m³. Calculate each region separately. A rectangular bounding box around an irregular load estimates its envelope, not the amount of solid material inside.

Check inputs, rounding and the reverse calculation

The calculator requires positive area and height, uses numeric input and displays volume to two decimals. Blank, zero or negative entries reset the result to zero; this is an input state, not proof of zero physical volume. A small positive result can also round to 0.00. Keep the source measurements and unrounded arithmetic when precision matters; decimal display does not improve measurement accuracy.

Reverse the first example in the volume-to-area calculator: 2.5 m³ divided by 0.25 m gives 10 m². If a shipment already has length, width and height, use three measured dimensions. For a finished pallet's outside envelope, use the pallet cube tool. These geometric estimates do not determine floor load, payload, stability or building clearance.

Record area, its measurement boundary, uniform-height assumption, depth conversion and the displayed result. Copy link shares the page address, not your entered values; supply the numeric record separately. Use NIST's SI length reference for the unit definitions.
