Where to get wood pallets

For free or low-volume whole pallets, ask recyclers, local businesses or listing sellers—but get explicit permission first. Verify ownership, condition, contamination and transport safety before moving any pallet.

Whether raw-wood packaging requires ISPM 15 treatment depends on the destination and route. An old HT mark alone does not prove that a repaired pallet remains compliant. Use an approved supplier for covered export packaging.

Where can I get free wood pallets?

Ask the site manager at a business, recycler or listing source for explicit permission. Free availability is local and cannot be guaranteed.

Can I take pallets left outside a business?

Do not assume they are abandoned. Get permission from an authorized site representative and avoid marked pool or rental assets.

Is an HT pallet safe for a DIY project?

The HT mark records a phytosanitary treatment, not the cargo history, preservative use, coatings or project suitability. Inspect and research the wood separately.

Plan a small collection before arriving at the site

An authorized business offers eight whole wooden pallets for collection. Ask which specific units are included, whether any are returnable assets and when a site representative can supervise access. Record the permission against photographs or identifying descriptions rather than treating permission for eight pallets as permission to take any eight from the yard. If the actual stack contains ten units, confirm the difference instead of assuming the additional two are also available.

Check whether your vehicle and loading arrangement are suitable for the measured volume and mass. Eight hypothetical 20 kg pallets weigh 160 kg before restraints or other cargo. That arithmetic does not establish vehicle capacity, a stable stack or lawful road transport; use the vehicle and equipment documentation and the site’s loading instructions. Nesting, stack height and protruding boards affect physical space, so footprint multiplication alone is an incomplete transport check.

Reinspect the actual units before reuse

If two of the eight have loose boards or unexplained staining, hold them out of the intended reuse rather than claiming eight suitable pallets because the permission covered eight. Ask whether the source wants them left on site or handled through another agreed route. Permission to collect and suitability to reuse are different decisions. Photograph any discrepancy and retain the revised accepted count.

For project lumber, switch to the pallet-wood sourcing workflow, which examines history and board suitability rather than only a whole pallet’s availability. For shipping, obtain the required construction and application record before loading cargo. Free or low-volume surplus should not become an unsupported load rating or a claim of current export compliance merely because an old HT mark is visible.
